So can you guys give me some details on the vigil? Like, where is it held at? How many usually show up? How long does it go for? Where do you all stay? etc? I'd love to some details.

Don, the vigil is held at the cemetary Shannon is burried at in Dayton, IN. It takes place on the Saturday closest to Shannon's birthday which is Sept 26th. Many might believe it's a morbid event but as someone who's attended 3 so far I can assure you it's everything but morbid! Usually we have about 300-400 people that stop by the grave throughout the weekend (though it doesnt seem like that many b/c of course not everyone is there at the same time). It's become more of a family gathering than anything, many people show up as early as the Wed before and stay as late as Tuesday after (personally, I enjoy the intimacy of sitting next to shannon with maybe 8 or 10 people that way you really get to know and create a bond with them). On Sunday there is a tribute concert called Vigilstock in which bands from all accross the country play not only Melon songs but also their own originals that were inspired by the Hoonman himself. It's hard to describe what the vigil is like, imagine hanging out with hundreds of melonheads, everyone jamming and a huge singalong? Many family members and personal friends of Shannons also attend so you get to hear lotsa funny stories too It's a beautiful event! The purpose is NOT to mourn Shannon's death but to celebrate his life. Also, Dayton is a very tiny town so you have to stay in Lafayette, which is 10 minutes away, if that. There are many hotels to choose from but every year the Knights Inn (which is also the cheapest) seems to be taken over by a bunch of guitar playing, stoner looking, booze drinking melonheads Let's just say they've been a little more tolerant with melon parties than most places usually are ;D For more information go to blindmelon.org and click "Remembering Shannon" there's lots of information there. Also I have lots of pictures of last year's vigil on myspace. Hope to see ya there!!! ;D

I think vigil should be all about Shannon~ I love the band and Travis is awesome But I'd like to see it stay the way it is I think ...I'm slow to come around where Shannon is involved I love all of you and I hope I have not hurt anyones feelings I just had to type it out loud know what I mean? You're right Brandy and my heart is with you 100%. There's a lot of joy because the guys are back together and it's brought a lot of fans back which is great, and I love Travis and the guys to bits but Shannon has a very special place in my heart.

Would it be ridiculous to book a room as far in advance as possible? If I book a room and it's paid for all the more leverage to shirk my responsibilities and go! And it is on Sat sept 27 according to blindmelon.org. I am also looking for a melon or melons to share the ride-Mass to Indy is going to be a long lonely trip!

Yeh it should definitely be all about Shannon. I am so excited that my girlfriend and I will be making it out this year. We have visited Shannon's final resting place previously and it is a wonderful tribute to him.

But we can still be there a bit, then go elsewhere...oh well we'll see, it's still fuckin far away, lol. 293 days... I've been going to the Vigil since 2000 and I think Gabby did a great job explaining but I would like to take a moment to share Nel's rules. You all can come whenever and party but nothing comes into the cemetary. The local cops come out dressed like Melons and they will arrest you if you have drugs or alcohol. These are some of her more important rules.... NO DRUGS NO ALCOHOL NO VIDEOCAMERAS NO EXCEPTIONS You can take all the still shots you want but no video at the Vigil. I always wind up catching people and I hate being a bitch but I have to say something! No offense to anyone but someone snuck vids last year and they put them online and thank God we were able to get them yanked from youtube but it's Nel's worst fear as it exploits something private so please pass these rules along to everyone you can so that we won't have problems. The Knight's Inn is cool and you should call by April or May as there are Perdue home games and the rooms go WAY fast. There is a Super 8 across from KI that is nice and not terribly expensive. Share rooms too so you guys can defray as much cost as possible! Looking forward to meeting you all in September! #hoonsmiley#

I have a feeling that the Vigil is really going to grow this year...it seems alot of people who haven't been previously are expecting to go this year!
